How to Renew a UAE Residence Visa, Step by Step

Renewal is the most routine thing in UAE residency and the most commonly mishandled, for one reason: nobody owns the date. The employee assumes the employer is tracking it, the employer assumes the PRO is, and the PRO is tracking whatever they were told about.

This guide sets out the sequence and, more usefully, who should be watching what.

Who Renews It

Depends on who sponsors you, and this determines who should be watching the date:

The pattern to notice: in most cases somebody other than the visa holder drives it, which is exactly why dates get dropped. If you are the visa holder, know your own expiry regardless of whose job it technically is.

The Sequence

1. Check your expiry date and work backwards. A free status enquiry confirms it: see checking a visa status by passport number.
2. Confirm passport validity. A passport close to expiry stops a renewal, and renewing a passport takes its own time in your home country.
3. Arrange or confirm health insurance. Mandatory, and an expired policy halts everything.
4. Employment cases: the work permit renews too. Labour side and immigration side both have to move. See the labour card and work permit.
5. Medical fitness test, repeated for most applicants.
6. Emirates ID renewal submitted, with biometrics if required.
7. Residence visa reissued, electronically in most cases.
8. Verify it actually issued. Do not assume. Run the status check again.

That last step is not padding. A meaningful share of the problems we see are cases where everybody assumed the renewal completed and nobody confirmed it, which surfaces at an airport or a bank months later.

What It Costs

A renewal is a stack of fees rather than one price, and the components differ from a first issuance because there is no entry permit and usually no status change.

From the current price book, real renewal line items include the work permit renewal on the labour side, a fresh medical at AED 323.25 for a standard test, a two-year Emirates ID at AED 387.69 and visa stamping at AED 546.65.

The Grace Period, and Why It Is Not a Plan

There is a limited period after a residence visa expires during which you are not immediately in breach. People treat that as a buffer.

It is better understood as an emergency provision.

Once it ends, fines accrue on a daily basis, and an out-of-status resident hits friction everywhere: banking, licences, school administration, travel.

The amounts and the length of any grace have been revised over time, so confirm the current position with ICP or, for Dubai, GDRFA rather than relying on a figure somebody quoted.

The Things That Stop a Renewal

From experience, in rough order of frequency:

• Insufficient passport validity. The most common single blocker, and the slowest to fix because it happens in another country.
• Lapsed health insurance. Easy to fix, easy to overlook.
• An expired establishment card on the company side, which silently freezes every visa transaction. See the establishment card.
• Unpaid fines against the individual or the company, including an unpaid ILOE subscription.
• Missing tenancy documentation for family renewals, which in Dubai means Ejari.
• A name mismatch after a passport renewal changed how the name is printed.

Notice how many of these are knowable sixty days out and none of them are knowable seven days out. That is the entire argument for lead time.

When the Passport Has Been Renewed Since Last Time

A specific case that causes more trouble than it should. Your residence record is linked to a passport number.

Renew the passport and that link points at a document you no longer carry.

Nothing dramatic happens immediately, which is why people leave it. Then a status check against the new number returns nothing, or the renewal will not proceed, or an airline flags a mismatch.

Report the new passport to the immigration authority, keep the old one if it carries the residence record, and verify afterwards rather than assuming. Our Emirates ID guide covers the same issue on the card side.

Renewing a Family Visa

Two things make family renewals different. First, every dependant renews on the sponsor's status, so if your own visa lapses theirs are exposed, which makes the sponsor's date the one to diary earliest.

Second, the eligibility conditions are re-tested, so a change in your salary or accommodation since the original application can affect a renewal that you assumed was automatic.

A practical note on documents before the sequence below. Keep a single folder, digital is fine, holding your passport, Emirates ID, current visa record, insurance certificate, labour contract and tenancy documentation.

Every renewal asks for some subset of those, and the difference between a smooth renewal and a fortnight of chasing is usually just whether somebody has to hunt for a tenancy contract from two years ago.

What Changes on a Renewal Against a First Issuance

Worth understanding because it explains why renewal is cheaper and faster, and where the remaining risk sits.

A renewal skips the entry permit entirely, because you are already here, and skips the status change for the same reason. Those are two of the larger fees on a first issuance, which is why a renewal costs meaningfully less than the original.

It keeps the medical for most applicants, the Emirates ID cycle, the insurance requirement and, for employment cases, the labour-side permit renewal.

So the number of moving parts falls but does not collapse, and the dependencies that remain are the slow ones: an appointment, an insurance policy, a passport.

The genuinely new risk on a renewal is drift. Circumstances change over two years.

A salary that has moved, an address that has changed, a family member who has aged past a threshold, a passport that was replaced.

Each of those was fine at issuance and can affect a renewal, which is why a renewal is not simply a repeat of a form you already filled in.

There is also a question of who pays, which the law and the contract answer rather than custom.

For an employment visa the renewal is generally the employer cost as part of sponsoring you, and a contract that pushes it onto the employee is worth reading carefully.

For a family visa the sponsor pays. For an investor or partner visa in your own company, it is a company cost.

Renewing While Outside the Country

A question we get often, usually late. Residence visas carry conditions about continuous presence, and an extended absence can affect a visa independently of its printed expiry date.

Which means the honest answer to "can I renew from abroad" is that it depends on how long you have been away and on the visa type.

Two practical rules. If you know a long absence is coming, ask before you go rather than after, because the options available in advance are better than the options available afterwards.

And if you are already abroad and the expiry is approaching, treat it as urgent rather than as something to sort out on your return, because the sequence available to you narrows as the date passes.

For Employers: How to Make This a Non-Event

• One tracked list covering the trade licence, the establishment card and every employee document, each on its own cycle.
• Per-document lead times. A passport needs months of warning; an Emirates ID needs weeks. A single blanket reminder is not enough.
• Name an owner for each date. "The PRO handles it" is not an owner.
• Confirm completion, every time, with a status check rather than an assumption.
